The Korean company, Samsung, rushed production to beat the new iPhone, encountered a serious hardware defect that caused batteries to catch fire, and then fumbled its way through an inconsistent recall process.

$17 billion in sales lost as Samsung permanently discontinues the Galaxy Note 7.

Samsung confirmed the official discontinuation of the Galaxy Note 7 line in a filing with South Korean regulators today.

And with this, it is Google’s best opportunity, as they are about to release their newest smartphone, Pixel. Samsung’s recent troubles will strengthen that and benefit the Pixel. The device is being labeled as the “first real Google phone.”
